Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance helps protect your savings, your family, and your ability to choose how and where you receive care if you need assistance later in life.
Traditional health insurance and Medicare generally aren’t designed to cover extended custodial care. Long-term care insurance can help pay for services such as care in your home, assisted living, memory care, adult day care, and nursing home care, depending on the policy.

What Is Long-Term Care Insurance?
Long-term care insurance is designed to help cover the cost of care when a person can no longer independently perform certain activities of daily living—such as bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, or maintaining continence—or experiences a qualifying cognitive impairment.
Rather than paying the entire cost of care from personal savings or relying primarily on family members, an LTC policy can provide a dedicated pool of benefits for qualifying care.
What Can Long-Term Care Insurance Cover?
Depending on the policy, benefits may be available for in-home care, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, memory care, adult day care, respite care, hospice-related services, and other forms of qualified long-term care.
One of the most important parts of selecting a policy is understanding exactly where benefits can be used and what triggers a claim, because policy provisions vary by insurance company and product.
How Long-Term Care Benefits Work
A long-term care policy is typically built around several major decisions: the monthly benefit, benefit period or total benefit pool, elimination period, and inflation protection.
For example, someone might purchase a policy providing up to $7,500 per month of eligible benefits. Depending on the policy design, benefits could be available for a specified number of years, until a defined pool of money is exhausted, or potentially for an unlimited benefit period.
We help clients compare these structures rather than simply shopping for the lowest premium.
Long-Term Care Insurance for Couples
Couples may have additional planning options.
Certain policies offer shared-care benefits, allowing spouses or partners to access benefits from a combined or interconnected pool. This can provide additional flexibility if one person ultimately requires significantly more care than the other.
We can compare individual coverage, shared-care designs, and other available options to determine which structure fits your retirement plan.
When Should You Consider Long-Term Care Insurance?
Many people begin evaluating long-term care insurance in their 50s or early 60s, although there isn’t one ideal age for everyone.
Waiting can create two challenges: premiums generally become more expensive as you age, and changes in your health can affect your ability to qualify.
Long-term care insurance is medically underwritten. Your health history, medications, diagnoses, cognitive history, mobility, and other factors can affect eligibility and pricing.
That makes it worthwhile to explore your options while you’re healthy—even if you ultimately decide to wait before purchasing coverage.
Protecting Retirement Assets
One of the primary reasons people purchase long-term care insurance is to protect retirement assets.
Without insurance, an extended care event may require someone to draw from savings, investments, retirement accounts, or other assets that were originally intended to provide retirement income or eventually pass to family members.
Long-term care insurance doesn’t eliminate every financial risk associated with aging. Instead, it allows you to transfer a portion of that risk to an insurance company in exchange for a premium.
Benefit Periods and Unlimited Coverage
Some policies provide coverage for a specific period, such as three, five, or six years. Others establish a total dollar pool that can potentially last longer when the full monthly benefit isn’t used.
Certain policies may also offer an unlimited benefit period, providing qualifying benefits without a predetermined maximum benefit duration, subject to the terms of the policy.
Unlimited coverage can provide significantly greater protection against an extended care event, but it can also increase the premium. We can compare limited and unlimited designs to determine how the differences affect both benefits and cost.
Inflation Protection
Long-term care can occur decades after a policy is purchased, which makes inflation protection an important consideration.
Depending on the policy, inflation options may increase available benefits over time. The appropriate structure can depend on your age, budget, expected retirement timeline, and how much future long-term care risk you want the insurance company to assume.
When comparing policies, we can illustrate how different inflation optio
Protecting Your Family
The financial cost of long-term care is only part of the equation.
When no formal plan exists, spouses and adult children may become responsible for coordinating or providing care. Having dedicated long-term care benefits can give a family more resources to hire professional caregivers and choose an appropriate care setting.
For many families, the goal isn’t simply protecting money. It’s also creating options, independence, and a plan before care is needed.
Traditional Long-Term Care vs. Hybrid Policies
There are multiple ways to insure long-term care risk.
Traditional long-term care insurance is primarily designed to provide LTC benefits. Hybrid policies may combine life insurance or an annuity with long-term care benefits.
Neither structure is automatically better. The appropriate approach depends on factors such as your age, assets, health, cash flow, legacy goals, and how much long-term care protection you want.
As an independent brokerage, we can help compare different approaches rather than limiting the conversation to a single insurance company or product.
How Much Long-Term Care Insurance Do You Need?
There isn’t a universal answer.
Instead of automatically insuring 100% of a potential future care expense, we look at your existing assets, retirement income, family situation, geographic area, desired care setting, and how much risk you’re comfortable retaining yourself.
For some clients, the goal is comprehensive protection. For others, insurance is designed to cover a substantial portion of care while personal assets cover the remainder.
